🌊 Crossing to the Island
If you’ve ever driven the coast road from Whitley Bay and spotted a white lighthouse rising from a tiny tidal island, you’ve already glimpsed one of the North East’s most magical places — St Mary’s Island.
Most of the day it sits just out of reach, the causeway hidden under the sea like a secret path waiting for the tide to turn. But when the water draws back, Evelyn, Elliot, and Ozzy can’t resist stepping out — sea air, rockpools, and adventure in every splash.
Tip: Always check the tide times posted by the car park before you cross — the sea can return faster than you think!
🏝️ A Lighthouse with Secrets
The present lighthouse was built in 1898, but the island’s story reaches far deeper — monks, smugglers, even shipwrecks.
Climb the 137 steps to the lantern room and you’ll see Tynemouth Priory in one direction and Seaton Sluice in the other — two locations that feature in the Evelyn & Elliot Mysteries series.
At the top, pause and listen — the wind and waves hum like the island’s own heartbeat.
🐦 Wildlife & Wonders
The island is a Local Nature Reserve where you might spot grey seals basking on the rocks or terns diving for fish. Inside the visitor centre, volunteers help families identify birds and sea creatures.
Elliot’s game of choice? Seal or Rock? ( Ozzy never gets it right first. )
🎒 Family Adventure Tips
-
📅 Check tide times before crossing.
-
☕ Warm up afterwards at St Mary’s Inn Café with hot chocolate or soup.
-
📝 Bring a sketchpad or camera to capture the lighthouse view.
-
💬 Ask the wardens about the island’s legends — some say a keeper still walks there on stormy nights!
🔦 The Evelyn & Elliot Mystery Connection
Fans of The St Mary’s Island Mystery will remember this spot as the beginning of a clue trail leading to Delaval Hall. When you visit, look closely at the lighthouse stones — you might spot a compass carving just like Evelyn did.
